One of the largest minority groups in China lives deep in the remote, mountainous region in the Three Gorge area —- It is the Tujia ethnic minority . They remain some traditional and immemorial wedding customs such as crying marriage song , sitting on beds , carving face , presenting special bridal gifts and so on. Among all these well-known wedding customs, the crying marriage song has been considered the most special one.
The traditional crying marriage song is a kind of long interesting song which has been handed down from one generation to another till now. It is to express the bride’s appreciation to parents and emotions of reluctant to be apart with relatives and good friends. The crying marriage song usually begins three days or seven days before wedding, some even earlier. And the song comes to the climax the night before wedding day. The parents of the bride will invite other nine young girls who have been unattached to sing the crying marriage song with the bride. This is called “ song of ten sisters ” because there are ten girls including the bride sing the song together.
You may consider it a strange phenomenon that people of Tujia ethnic minority are used to crying for the joyful marriage and dancing for the funeral. But it is true and we have to respect their special custom. Just ten years ago, it was shameful for the bride to be bad at crying. But now, it is no longer a standard of judging the bride’s moral integrity.Anyway, crying marriage is a unique tradition that also exists in some other ethnic groups such as Hani ethnic minority.
There are some other interesting wedding customs in Tujia ethnic minority, such as” stealing marriage ” which has been handed down till now. The “swag” is various among which the rice bowl is the most representative one. On the wedding day, the procession on bridegroom’s part will go up to the bride’s house and enjoy a big dinner prepared by the bride’s family, during which they will stealthily hide the rice bowls at their chests or under their arms. Then it is time for them to take the “swag” back to the groom’s home to win their rewards. The stolen bowls are viewed as the symbol of wealth and happiness, and the more are stolen, the wealthier and happier the new couple will be.The similar marital traditions can be seen in Daur ethnic group and Dongxiang ethnic group .
The Tujia girls are all good at dancing and singing .What’s more, they are so beautiful that even handsome French boy has been attracted. The pictures above show a traditional Tujia ethnic minority wedding of our adorable Tujia girl Jiang guanlan and French guy Julian Leiber . Congratulations!
